Marker pillars rising from the ground.

Your first stop-off point is Woodhenge where you'll see pillars marking the positions of Neolithic wooden posts aligned to the summer solstice sunrise and which have long since rotted away. It's an important World Heritage Site and will certainly whet your appetite for the main attraction—Stonehenge.

Close up of a trilithon.

Stonehenge is the most famous and enigmatic historical site in the country. Developed in stages over a 5,000 year period, the giant standing stones weigh up to 50 tonnes and dominate the landscape of Salisbury Plain. Was it a ceremonial temple… or built by aliens? You decide.

On site is the fabulous Stonehenge Visitor Centre where you can further explore the mysteries of the ancient stones. Here you'll enjoy world-class exhibitions and multi-media displays. Outside there are reconstructed Neolithic houses—where if you're lucky—you might see ancient crafting demonstrations and bread-making using prehistoric techniques.

By now you'll be feeling a tad peckish so there's nothing better than a traditional pub lunch. We like the Wheatsheaf in Wiltshire's Lower Woodford, where you can enjoy hearty pub classics like fish & chips or a Sunday roast. Cosy up by the log fire in winter and enjoy a nice pint of English real ale and a bag of nuts. Your next tour stop is the historic city of Salisbury.

Down the main aisle towards the alter with columns and arches.

Salisbury is a beautiful medieval city built on a prehistoric site. See the magnificent Salisbury Cathedral, which boasts the tallest spire in Britain. Built between 1220 and 1280, the Cathedral still holds one of the original copies of Magna Carta. There's lots of artistic and historical things to see at the cathedral including a modernist sculpture by Barbara Hepworth and a fourteenth century mechanical clock. Then it's off to nearby Old Sarum—the original setting of Salisbury Cathedral.

Norman motte and ruined stone wall.

The ancient settlement at Old Sarum is located on a hill just two miles from Salisbury and appears in some of England's earliest documentaion. The site has been occupied since 3000BC and around 400BC an Iron Age hillfort was built to control trade paths. Then came the Romans after the invasion of 43AD and in the sixth century the Saxons took the fort as a stronghold against the Vikings.

Then it was the turn of the Normans to get a look in; building a castle, palace and cathedral. In the early thriteenth century, stone from the site was used to build the new cathedral that we see today in 'New Salisbury'. The remains of the palace can still be seen as well as the Norman motte and ruins from various parts of Old Sarum's incredible history.

Our customers say...
"We thoroughly enjoyed our wonderful tour of the English countryside. We found David on the internet and he custom designed a budget-friendly tour that perfectly met the needs of our family. David promptly picked us up and vehicle was clean and comfortable. Along the drive to Stonehenge, he provided us with historical and trivial information about the areas we were travelling through. David is extremely knowledgeable, he was very patient with our questions, and great with the kids too. The tour was the highlight of our trip to London"

"Thanks for taking our clients/my relatives to Windsor and Hampton Court on Thursday. They really enjoyed the day with you. They particularly enjoyed seeing your old school and some of the more unusual parts of London"
