Your first stop is Winchester—a beautiful Hampshire city on the edge of England's South Downs National Park. Once an Iron Age trading centre and England’s ancient capital, Winchester was the seat of Alfred the Great, a Saxon king. The main attraction is the medieval Winchester Cathedral and nearby are the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the Winchester City Mill. The Great Hall of Winchester Castle houses the medieval round table linked to King Arthur.

The eleventh century Winchester Cathedral is simply full of surprises. Not only is it the resting place of English novelist Jane Austen but there's also a sculpture in the Crypt by the internationally renowned artist, Sir Antony Gormley. It's also the longest medieval cathedral in the world. Also of special interest is the seventeenth century Morley Library, Winchester Bible, and the City Museum which has lots of interesting exhibits telling the story of Winchester.

We know the best places for lunch, and suggest a traditional English pub, before we head off to the ancient monument of Stonehenge on Wiltshire's Salisbury Plain.

Before the main event however we'll take you to see Woodhenge where you'll see pillars marking the positions of Neolithic wooden posts which have long since rotted away. It's an important World Heritage Site and consists of six concentric ovals of standing posts, surrounded by a bank and ditch.

The stones on an overcast day.

Located in the county of Wiltshire, England, Stonehenge is a World Heritage site and the best known prehistoric site in Europe. Although we have no real way of knowing how it was used and how the people who built the site experienced it, since it’s ‘discovery ‘in the 18th century Stonehenge has fascinated and captivated visitors. It’s alignment with the Summer and Winter Solstices suggests links to the sun. More recently a Neolithic ‘calendar ‘ made up of the stones has been suggested.

On site is the fabulous Stonehenge Visitor Centre where you can further explore the mysteries of the ancient stones. Here you'll enjoy world-class exhibitions and multi-media displays. Outside there are reconstructed Neolithic houses—where if you're lucky—you might see ancient crafting demonstrations and bread-making using prehistoric techniques.

Our customers say...
"We thoroughly enjoyed our wonderful tour of the English countryside. We found David on the internet and he custom designed a budget-friendly tour that perfectly met the needs of our family. David promptly picked us up and vehicle was clean and comfortable. Along the drive to Stonehenge, he provided us with historical and trivial information about the areas we were travelling through. David is extremely knowledgeable, he was very patient with our questions, and great with the kids too. The tour was the highlight of our trip to London"

"We have engaged David on our last three trips to Britain and continue to be delighted with his service. His van is clean and comfortable; he's always right on time; and we can count on him to plan interesting itineraries for us. He's an informative tour guide, giving us just the right amount of information without being too loquacious. He's eager to please, and willing to alter the tour on the fly if interesting alternatives present themselves. I am happy to give David my most enthusiastic recommendation - you won't be disappointed"
